Wow. What an amazing visit from my alma mater. I was pleased to hear when Giacomo Bernardi, and a couple students were planning to visit Maizuru on their Japan leg of their trip. I eagerly agreed to help them plan a dive of my new favorite dive spot, Kaze Jima, to look for some Japanese surfperch, or Umi-tanago (ウミタナゴ). It was really nice to reconnect with some Santa Cruz peeps again. There's definitely a culture that comes out of that school and the divers are always kickass. I didn't have to worry much knowing the training they need to be certified to dive there. If they can brave Monterey bay and Central California waters, the Sea of Japan is a breeze. We got to see so many fish and it was nice that Giacomo commented how there was an incredible mix of temperate and tropical species. This puts our little area in Kyoto and Fukui in a bit of a transition zone, perfect for studying the eventual effects of ocean warming due to climate change. Makes my research feel all the more significant.
Thank you eahc of you, Giacomo, Shinji, Eric, Allyson for coming out to Japan, as well as Henmi sensei and Awata Sensei for joining us for diving. It was a great weekend and some perfect conditions and weather for it. I also enjoyed showing you guys the local culinary experience to be had here. Way to be adventurous. Couldnt have asked for anything better. Hope those presentations in Taiwan went swimmingly. Till the next trip my dudes.
